Visas and insurance

Visas

EEA citizens and Swiss nationals

A national of another EEA Member State (EEA citizens are nationals of EU Member States, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) or Switzerland may enter the Republic of Slovenia with a valid personal identity card or passport, and does not require an entry permit (visa) or residence permit, regardless of the purpose of entering and residing in the Republic of Slovenia (including entry for employment, study, self-employment or residence purposes).

Non-European citizens

Non-European citizens willing to travel to the Schengen Area are bound to apply for a short-term Schengen visa under “tourist” specification. Depending on the visa issued they may be allowed to enter once (single entry) or multiple times (multiple entries) and stay for no longer than 3 months 90 days per year in between the period of 6 months. Such a decision is made by the authorities depending on the nature of ones travel purpose and other relevant factors.

If you need a visa to enter Slovenia, you can obtain one from the Slovenian consular mission in your country. If there is no Slovenian consular mission in your country, please contact a consular mission of any Member State of the Schengen Area. All Schengen Area countries issue Schengen visas under the same conditions, taking into account the interests of the other Member States as well. A visa issued by one Schengen Member State is also valid for the other Member States. In other words, this means that you can visit several countries which are in the Schengen Area.

Students can receive supporting documents for visa purposes (Letter of acceptance) upon request via email, but only after the payment has been received. Letter of acceptance can only be issued for the official dates of the programme (maximum for the whole July).

Applying for a valid visa can be a lengthy process. We recommend that you start with the application process as soon as possible.

Health Insurance

The citizens of European Union Member States can travel to Slovenia with the European Health Insurance Card. This card can also be obtained by the citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The card gives you access to health services in the public health sector, i.e. at the doctors and pharmacies, under the same conditions as the Slovenian citizens. With the European Health Insurance Card, you get all the necessary medical care to allow you to continue your stay in Slovenia. However, the card does not cover health services from private providers.

A special agreement also applies to the citizens of Croatia, who can obtain health services in Slovenia with their health cards.

For the citizens of all other countries, it is best that you take out international travel insurance even before travelling to Slovenia. They are also recommended for the citizens of the above-mentioned countries.

Individuals who pay for the cost of health care services in the Republic of Slovenia can file a claim for reimbursement of costs with their insurance company when they return to their country. They are advised to discuss with their national contact points as to which documentation must be attached to the application.

The main reasons for paying for health care services in the Republic of Slovenia are as follows:

  • the insured person enforced the rights without having adequate documentation (European Health Insurance Cards …),
  • the rights were enforced with health care providers who do not constitute part of the public, national health care network,
  • the service is not a right from the compulsory health insurance system in the Republic of Slovenia,
  • additional payment to the full price of a certain service,
  • other.

For more detailed information on using health services, please refer to the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia.
