Financial statement analysis 1

Aims of the course

1. Introduce students to the methods of financial analysis from the point of view of external user that has no internal information
2. Provide students with methods of analysis that they can later supplement according to their practical needs.
3. Cover some classical topics in financial analysis as well as some newer tools and insights of financial analysis.
4. Teach students how to prepare a financial analysis of a selected company in comparison to its competitors.
5. Show students how to search for financial information through international databases.
6. Teach students how to prepare a valuation report of a selected company.

Course syllabus

1. Introduce to the basic tools of financial statement analysis.
2. Presentation of main financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement and comprehensive income statement)
3. Financial analysis with ratios (theoretical background and limitations of analysis with financial ratios, vertical and horizontal analysis, importance of benchmarks, market information, key financial ratios).
4. Financial analysis from the creditor's perspective (selection of financial ratios and their implications)
5. Financial analysis from the owner's perspective
6. Finding financial information on the internet and databases
7. Valuation models (DCF, dividend models, multipliers' models, liquidation value model)
