Taxes and Corporate Tax Burden

Aims of the course

The aim of the course is to introduce students the functioning of public finances with a focus on taxes paid by companies:
- Demonstrate the normative and positive theory of the allocation of public goods, the theory of public choice and selected topics from optimal taxation.
-Present the theoretical background of individual types of taxes (personal income tax, value added tax, corporate income tax, etc.), the issue of government revenue and expenditure, budget deficit and government debt.
- Present a comparative analysis of tax credits at company level and calculations of effective tax rates.

Competences:
- Knowledge of the importance and functioning of the fiscal system and the economic consequences of taxation.
- Knowledge of individual types of taxes from a theoretical point of view and specifically on the case of Slovenia (emphasis on taxes paid by companies).
- Ability to determine tax liabilities in cases from commercial practice.
- Ability to calculate and apply concepts of effective taxation in practice.
- Ability to search for and interpret data and information related to public finances.
- Ability to think critically on public finance-related topics.

2. Public choice theory.
3. Optimal taxation.
4. Taxes: personal income tax, value added tax, corporate income tax, property taxes.
5. Tax harmonisation in the EU.
6. Tax shields, effective tax rates.
7. Public revenue and expenditure
8. Budget deficit and public debt.
