Aims of the course

The objective of the course is to understand key concepts important for bank management and for management of financial institutions in general. The first part of the course deals with the role of banks as financial intermediaries. Subsequently, key concepts for risk measurement and management and asset and liability management in banking are developed. The students are acquainted with the role of prudential bank regulation with its impact on optimal bank strategy. The final part of the course deals with shaping bank strategies in highly turbulent and competitive banking environment in the current financial landscape.

2. Risk management in banking firms (interest rate risk, market risk, credi risk, operational risk)
3. Bank regulation and impact on bank operations:
a. Objectives ob bank regulation
b. Capital adequacy rules and bank capital management
c. Other types of regulation: deposit guarantee schemes, credit allocation, monetary control regulation
4. Asset-liability management in banking firms:
a. Asset management (credit allocation, risk profile determination, non-credit assets, credit pricing,…)
b. Liability management (deposit funding, non-deposit funding, deposit and non-deposit pricing,…)
c. Off-balance sheet operations
d. Securitisation
5. Development strategies of banks in international markets
6. The future of banking industry
