PRESENTATION

In order to support efficient information on European integration processes, the European Commission granted the status of European Documentation Center to a special organisational unit at the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana. From 1990 onwards EDC Ljubljana thus receives, stores, processes and offers for use integral documentation on the decisions of EU bodies (European Commission, European Council, European Parliament, Economic and Social Committee and the European Court of Justice), but also publications of the Council of Europe (Strasbourg), the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working conditions (Dublin), the European Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht), the statistical offices and national banks of Central and East European Countries and others documents.

The entire material is formally processed in accordance with the international cataloguing principles and indexed with descriptors from the Eurovoc thesaurus. The data are accessible via Cobiss system.

From as early as 1990 the centre has been connected online with numerous data bases of the European Commission in Luxembourg. They mainly consist of legal, journalism media, bibliographic and statistical bases and others related to the fields of research and development. Some of these data bases are not open to the public, and users are therefore required to apply for thematic and retrospective enquiries. In 1996 EDC established a local computer network, which enhanced the accessibility of the materials available in the centre as well as access by Internet to the servers of the European Union. This makes it possible for users to individually search and browse the CD-ROMs EDC provides and the public access data bases on the Internet.

During the first five years of its existence the Center operated as a specialised EDC and was promoted to the status of »Full EDC« in 1995. This entailed further substantial and technical broadening of its activities.
