Why study Business Informatics?

Numerous new companies are conquering the global market through innovative use of contemporary information technology. Digital transformation has become a necessity also for mature, already established companies. A strong grasp of information technology is imperative for successful digitalization, yet not sufficient, as digital transformation is foremost a business challenge that demands comprehensive knowledge of business informatics. Business informatics is one of the key areas organizations depend on for increasing effectiveness and efficiency of their business as well as gaining competitive advantage. It embodies much more than mere computing science, informatics or information technology. Rather it enables companies and other organizations to attain successful business change by introducing new approaches for employing digital technology for successful business process and business model optimization.

Enrolling to the Graduate Programme of Business informatics is thus for you, if you aspire to gain a broad understanding of informatics and wish to accept an interdisciplinary study that will prepare you for a successful career either as part of the company/organization or for helping design our collective future.

Knowledge and skills acquired by taking this programme

Business Informatics combines the areas of business knowledge, knowledge of management and social skills as well as business use of information technology. The figure below shows in more detail some key competencies in these areas in view of the knowledge and skills required as well as the typical job titles held by business information specialists.

As a graduate, you will acquire the highest level of expert competencies in the field of informatics and business. You will obtain practical knowledge of business transformation and digitalization, the development of new business models and advanced use of information technology in business operations. During the study you can acquire thorough knowledge and skills of business informatics and, by selecting the contents (courses), you can create an area of specialization that most closely corresponds to your personal, professional and employment ambitions.

A graduate with a focus on the digitalization of business operations will acquire the knowledge needed in the areas of developing and introducing information systems. He/She will know how to strategically plan digital business, the informatics in an organization, the information infrastructure and architecture as well as integration systems, how to model and improve business processes, design the development of solutions, introduce software solutions, ensure their quality and revise them as well as use information tools in the development of software solutions or provision of information services.

A graduate with an emphasis on seeking the business opportunities offered by information technology will understand the strategic importance and role of information technology in entrepreneurial ideas. He/She will be able to lead digital transformation, plan business models based on novelties created by fast technological changes, plan strategically and redesign business operations as well as establish business processes and direct their digitalization in big and as well small companies.

The third area of specialization largely combines the first two in terms of acquired competencies; however, a greater emphasis is placed on managerial skills. A graduate will be able to manage business process redesign and digitalization projects as well as information solution development projects. With the acquired practical experience he/she will be able to head a department for informatics, business processes or digital business.

The fourth option is the area of business analytics. A business data scientist is capable of managing and processing large quantities of data, analyzing complex data as well as formulating and substantively interpreting information. A graduate will acquire knowledge of the use of information technology and content knowledge e.g. of business process management, accounting and finance, marketing, logistics as well as the required methodological knowledge.
