What does Europe's future look like — and where does Slovenia fit in?
We had the privilege of welcoming Blaž Brodnjak, CEO of NLB d.d., for a guest lecture at @IMB. Drawing on extensive executive experience, he offered a compelling perspective on shifting geopolitical dynamics, the European Union’s evolving role, and Slovenia’s strategic position within this landscape.
The lecture highlighted the European Union’s progress in banking integration and emphasized the importance of advancing toward a Capital Markets Union, with a gradual shift from debt-based systems to more equity-oriented financing models. Particular attention was given to the long-term resilience of the European Union, which depends on its capacity for expansion and inclusiveness. In this context, Slovenia’s future development is closely linked to a stronger, more integrated, and geographically broader European framework.
Mr. Brodnjak also addressed the need to reconsider existing governance and decision-making structures within the EU, pointing to key challenges such as institutional efficiency, migration policies, and border management. He further underscored the importance of deeper economic and financial integration as a means to enhance Europe’s global competitiveness and ensure a more effective allocation of capital across member states.
Following the lecture, Mr. Brodnjak engaged with students in an interactive discussion, providing further insights and addressing a range of questions.
Being the CEO of a systemic bank means far more than just mastering your own industry, as it requires thinking and acting globally. Thank you, Blaž Brodnjak, for demonstrating this so powerfully in front of our students. A true reminder that we should always learn from the best.
