Programme in public sector and enviromental economics

Why should you decide to study public sector economics and management or environmental economics? Because on average the public sector generates up to one-half of the gross domestic product of a country, whereas environmental care is an element of sustainable development. Good knowledge of both is not only important for public sector institutions but also private companies.

Selecting this programme is therefore the right choice for all those who would like to contribute to the better functioning of the public sector and anyone in private companies working with public institutions and companies and dealing with decisions made by the public sector in various areas. Moreover, this programme is the right choice for anyone interested in environmental issues.

Students interested in studying public sector issues have the opportunity to enroll into joint degree programme of two institutions:

  • University of Ljubljana, School of Economics and Business (SEB LU),
  • The School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo (SEB) and

The joint degree programme was developed within the Tempus grant of the EU. Students can select the joint degree programme (SEB LU and SEB). The language of instructions is English.

To obtain two diplomas students enrol into both institutions.

Knowledge and skills acquired by taking this programme

You will learn about the specifics of the economics and management of public institutions and companies which will help you manage them. In your analyses of practical examples, you will apply knowledge for adopting decisions regarding various public-sector operations and environmental protection.

You will develop critical thinking and a sense for team and analytical work, along with the correct identification of research issues and their analysis. You will acquire the knowledge required to advise infrastructural companies about economic price regulation and quality as well as knowledge of liberalised markets with network activities. This know-how will also be useful if you are employed in state regulatory agencies. In addition, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed for managerial, advisory, analytical and research work in a plethora of not just public institutions and public companies but also private companies which co-operate daily with companies engaged in infrastructural activities and competitive markets (suppliers of energy products and telecommunication services etc.).

The knowledge gained through the study will qualify you to:

  • work in and manage different public sector institutions at the narrow state level, in municipalities and public institutes,
  • work as an analyst and advisor in companies dealing in telecommunications, energy and other infrastructural companies,
  • work as an analyst and advisor to the management of regulated companies in the area of economic regulation,
  • work as an analyst and advisor in companies in the area of environmental management,
  • perform advisory, research and analytical works in regulatory agencies (e.g. the Energy Agency of the RS, and the Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the RS).

  • manager/head of a public institution, an affiliated body or a public institute,
  • advisor on environmental issues in a public or private company,
  • analyst/advisor in a regulated company (energy, telecommunications, railway, public utility companies etc.) on the issue of economic regulation,
  • analyst in a private or public company in the field of research of liberalised markets in the area of network activities and advisor for the selection of suppliers (of electricity, gas etc.),
  • analyst/advisor in a private company on co-operation with different public institutions and on various areas of public sector operations.
