This exceptional lecture, held in the presence of esteemed academics, students, and prominent representatives from the banking and diplomatic communities, provided a rare opportunity to engage directly with one of the leading voices in European banking.
Among the distinguished guests attending the event were Professor Gregor Majdič, Rector of the University of Ljubljana; Professor Tomaž Turk, Dean of the School of Economics and Business; Paola Papanicolaou, Chief of the International Banks Division at Intesa Sanpaolo; Giuseppe Cavagna, Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Slovenia; Luigi Fuzio, CEO and President of the Management Board of Intesa Sanpaolo Bank in Slovenia; along with numerous colleagues from Intesa Sanpaolo, faculty members, and students from the International Master Programme of Business and Organisation from School of Economics and Business.
In a lecture marked by depth and strategic insight, Chairman Gros Pietro offered a comprehensive analysis of the structural transformations reshaping the financial industry. Drawing from his vast experience and leadership at Intesa Sanpaolo, he examined the dynamic interplay between traditional banking institutions and emerging fintech and Big Tech players, highlighting the operational, regulatory, and geopolitical implications of digital disruption in global finance.
Chairman Gros Pietro explored the unique challenges facing European banks in the age of platform economics, rapid technological acceleration, and increasing competition from non-bank financial institutions. He emphasized the need for robust strategic responses — including the development of proprietary digital banks, investment in advanced technologies, and strategic partnerships with fintech firms — to preserve the competitiveness, relevance, and resilience of Europe’s financial institutions.
Reflecting on the potential consequences of unchecked technological disruption, he called for a renewed commitment to fair competition, stronger regulatory harmonization, and a vision of financial innovation aligned with the public prosperity.
In his remarks, Chairman Gros Pietro underscored the vital role of banks as pillars of economic and social cohesion:
"European banks must not only innovate but also remain deeply anchored in their responsibility to society. In this transformative era, the sustainable development of our economies depends on safeguarding the balance between progress and inclusion, between efficiency and equity."
Chairman Gros-Pietro’s visit marks a significant milestone in the School’s ongoing efforts to foster dialogue between academia and the business world. Events like this serve to deepen the understanding of complex global economic issues, strengthen institutional partnerships, and encourage students to engage with real-world challenges through a multidisciplinary lens and It is a true privilege to host such an influential leader at our institution.
