Professor Miroslav Verbič PhD receives Zois’ recognition for significant achievements in the field of research on financial uncertainty and economic policies
We are very proud to announce that Miroslav Verbič PhD, Full Professor at the School of Economics and Business University of Ljubljana, chairman of the faculty's Administrative Board, and scientific advisor at the Institute of Economic Research, has received the Zois’ recognition—the highest national award for scientific and research achievements—for his significant achievements in the field of research on financial uncertainty and economic policies.
The research of Professor Verbič contributes to a better understanding of the impact of financial crises and government decisions on companies and the economy as a whole, particularly in Slovenia and the euro area. He shows how financial uncertainty can hamper business investment and economic growth, and proposes measures that governments and central banks could take to increase stability in difficult times. This provides policymakers with better guidelines for protecting jobs, supporting businesses, and ensuring financial stability. Its findings are a valuable tool for strategic economic management, particularly in times of crisis.
Zois’ recognition is not only a recognition of scientific excellence, but also of the social impact of research. Professor Verbič's work goes beyond academic publications and touches on key issues facing economies in times of uncertainty – from the design of fiscal measures to understanding the effects of credit shocks. His empirical analyses have repeatedly found their way into professional circles, economic policies, and educational and public discourse.
The Zois Awards ceremony will take place on November 9, 2025, at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana, on the eve of the new Slovenian holiday – Science Day. This event will be an opportunity to pay tribute to exceptional researchers who, with their knowledge, are helping to create a more resilient and thoughtful society.
UL SEB proudly congratulates Professor Verbič and expresses its sincere gratitude for his outstanding contribution to science and society.
“Zois’s recognition is a great honour for me and, at the same time, a commitment to continue researching financial uncertainty and economic policies where they have the greatest impact on people’s lives and the functioning of the economy. In times of frequent shocks, from financial crises to pandemics and energy and geopolitical tensions, this field is even more relevant. It means a lot to me that this award was finally given for the field of economics, more specifically at the intersection of economics, finance, and econometrics. I would like to thank my colleagues at the School of University of Ljubljana, the Institute of Economic Research, and the University of Klagenfurt, without whom the in-depth and systematic research we have been developing for more than a decade would not have been possible. I accept this award as an incentive for further theoretical and, in particular, empirical research, for deepening cooperation with economic policy institutions, and, in general, for transferring knowledge into practice, from supporting businesses and protecting jobs to strengthening financial stability." - Professor Miroslav Verbič PhD.
