Visit to Sailing Point: Entrepreneurship, Sailing, and the Experiences of Tomaž Čopi
Students of the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana learned about the entrepreneurial story of Tomaž Čopi at the Sailing Point company, who showed how perseverance in sailing and success in entrepreneurship are closely connected through his sports and business experiences.
Students of the School of Economics and Business of the University of Ljubljana visited the Sailing Point company on Thursday, April 9, 2026, where they were welcomed by Tomaž Čopi, the company's CEO, a top sailor, three-time Olympian, and three-time coach of Olympic women, who has marked Slovenian sailing through his rich sports and business career. The visit took place as part of the project Entrepreneurial Knowledge for Recognition (Problem-Based Learning of Students in the Workplace), mentored by Prof. Dr. Boštjan Antončič and Eldina Domazet.
Tomaž Čopi presented the development of the Sailing Point company, a sailing equipment store, to the students and took them through the key milestones of his entrepreneurial journey. He emphasized that entrepreneurship and sailing have a lot in common: in both cases, success requires clear direction, good preparation, adaptability, trust in the team, and the ability to respond correctly to changing circumstances. His comparison between the entrepreneurial and sailing paths offered the students an interesting and very concrete perspective on how values from top-level sports can be successfully transferred to the business environment.
He also shared some of his rich sporting experience with the audience. As a sailor, he achieved top results in the 470 class with Mitja Margon and was also successful as a crew member in the RC44 class. In addition to his competitive career, he also left an important mark as a coach, as he participated in the development of Olympic sailors and helped create successes at the highest level.
He particularly emphasized that sailing is one of those sports that quickly takes over a person. Once you really get to know, understand, and love it, it often accompanies you for the rest of your life. He also emphasized the ecological aspect of sailing, as sailboats are mostly propelled by the wind, which gives this sport a special connection to nature and sustainability. The visit to Sailing Point was a valuable experience for the students, as it allowed them to have direct contact with a successful entrepreneur and top athlete who knows how to combine entrepreneurial thinking and sports discipline.
