Peter Trkman

Peter Trkman is Full Professor of Business Informatics at the University of Ljubljana School of Economics and Business. Throughout his academic career, he has been interested in: what do new technologies actually change for organisations and individuals? His research has ranged from e-business, technology adoption and business process management to business analytics, digital transformation and, more recently, generative artificial intelligence. He has published in leading international journals including Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Information Management, Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Business Research, Long Range Planning and Supply Chain Management. His work has received more than 12,000 citations, his h-index is 42, and five of his papers rank among the top 1% most cited papers in their respective fields in Scopus. A substantial part of his academic work involves evaluating the research of others. He has reviewed for more than 45 scientific journals and has served as reviewer, lead reviewer, panel member or evaluator for research funding agencies across Europe and beyond. Over the course of his career, he has participated in the evaluation of more than 600 research proposals. This provides him with a unique perspective on what separates fashionable ideas from genuinely valuable research and innovation. Generative AI has become a major focus of his recent work. He teaches Generative AI at university level, including doctoral courses, and works extensively with companies, public-sector institutions, universities, researchers and educational organisations. During the past three years, he has delivered more than 150 workshops, seminars and keynote presentations on generative AI. These sessions combine extensive practical experimentation with current AI tools and a critical examination of where they work, where they fail and how they can be used responsibly. His particular interest lies not in the tools themselves, but in how AI changes expertise, decision-making, research, education and professional work. As a visiting professor, researcher or invited lecturer, he has worked with universities and institutions in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Australia, China, South Korea, India, the United Arab Emirates, Peru and Colombia, among others. This international experience allows him to combine global developments with local organisational realities and practical implementation challenges. His teaching combines theoretical foundations, rigorous analysis of evidence and extensive hands-on work with real business problems. He has supervised more than 100 completed student theses, while his courses are consistently evaluated significantly above the faculty average. Beyond academic publications, Peter regularly writes about research, technology, higher education and generative AI. He is particularly interested in how AI changes the way ideas are created, evaluated and communicated. Despite working extensively with AI tools, he deliberately writes his own social-media posts. In the GenAI era, public writing is not merely a way of distributing content but a way of developing, testing and refining ideas.
