Working Across Cultures: What Gets Lost in Translation
Working Across Cultures: What Gets Lost in Translation
Why does direct feedback feel professional to one colleague and harsh to another? Why does one team prioritise deadlines while another invests in relationships first? At this interactive SEB Alumni workshop with Olga Mukhina, we will explore what lies behind these differences and how we can work more effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Speaking the same business language does not necessarily mean understanding things in the same way.
Some people expect clear rules and a detailed plan, while others are much more comfortable adapting as they go. For some, saying things directly is the most effective approach, while others prefer to communicate the same message more indirectly. In some environments, trust is built primarily through delivering good work. In others, developing a personal relationship is an important part of making that work possible in the first place.
We often become aware of these differences only when they lead to a misunderstanding.
Together with Olga Mukhina, ex-McKinsey HR professional, we will look at the everyday situations where cultural differences become visible in the workplace. Through practical examples, discussion and group activities, we will explore how culture, personality and our own assumptions shape the way we communicate, collaborate and respond to others.
What you will learn:
-
distinguish between cultural patterns, personality, and stereotypes,
-
how to recognise and challenge our own biases,
-
rules versus relationships in different cultural environments,
-
different approaches to time, planning and deadlines,
-
direct versus indirect feedback,
-
how people respond to uncertainty and unexpected situations,
-
how to adapt our communication style across cultures,
-
key elements of intercultural intelligence.
Rather than learning fixed rules for individual cultures, the workshop will help participants better understand what may be happening behind different behaviours and expectations, and apply these insights when working with international colleagues, clients, partners and diverse teams.
Notice
The workshop will be held in English and will be highly interactive, combining short theoretical inputs with group discussions and activities. Places are limited to 25 participants.
