Aims of the course

- familiarize the students with the functioning of multinational firms, their specifics and their impact on competitors and host-country characteristics;
- comprehend the rigorous mathematical models of multinational firms in the context of trade models;
- analyze the role multinational firms play in the age of globalization.

Course syllabus

1. International trade versus multinational production (substitutes or complements) 2. Defining multinational enterprises and an analysis of the causes and consequences of the spread of multinational production in the late 20th century 3. Historic evolution of the theory of multinational enterprises 4. Analysis of the theoretical modules that comprise the theory of multinational enterprises 5. Theoretical model of multinational firms 6. An overview of empirical research on multinational production and an evaluation of the role of multinational enterprises and foreign direct investment in the globalization process 7. Analysis of Slovene multinational firms: does foreign direct investment decrease foreign trade
