Health Economics

Aims of the course

Students:
− develops an understanding of economic issues that arise in the healthcare system
− links microeconomic knowledge at the intermediate level of complexity and knowledge about health care
− get to know the environment in which their future employers operate
− develop the understanding of challenges facing health care
− develop the understanding of the role of health care in the Slovenian economy
− develop the ability to use national and international literature and other sources of information
− develop the ability to collect and interpret data
− develop the ability to communicate their findings and views (orally and in written form),
− develop social skills and ability to work in teams

Course syllabus

Content:

1. Introduction: health economics, health
and economic burden of disease

2. Outline of the health care system in Slovenia
− health care activities (legal provisions, types and levels of activities, types of providers, other relevant stakeholders)
− financing of health care (analysis of care expenditures in Slovenia and internationally according to the System of health accounts)
− basic structure of health insurance in Slovenia (payers, solidarity in the funding of health care)
− review of past reforms and reform proposal

3. Specific features of health care services

4. Specific issues in health care demand and demand-side incentives

5. Specific issues in health care supply; non-profit organisations and supply-side incentives

6. Elements of health care systems and Health
care systems in selected countries

7. Economic evaluations in health care
