International Management

Cilji predmeta

Aim:

For many years, the field of international management was an orphan child in most business schools. With no clear mandate and often no dedicated faculty, it sat uncomfortably between the more widely recognized courses in general management and international business. The former staked its preemptive claim around the important issues of strategy and structure, which are at the roots of the job of the general manager. The latter typically took a more discipline-based approach to study in-depth the international economic and political operating environment for business, and the implications this had for various business functions. This course attempts to bridge the gap between these more traditional courses. It focuses on (strategic) management of firms in a global (glocal) environment. This perspective is considerably richer than the traditional view that regarded international as an adjective that qualified various functional tasks.

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the basic management issues that arise from the fact that most large and small firms from both, large and small countries, are forced to operate in an international context. For some countries, like Slovenia, it is also important to understand that successful internationalisation of their companies means faster economic development. It also shows the importance of localities in a global context. One of the most important issues in this course is to understand how companies should penetrate foreign markets in a more strategic and longer-term successful way.

Objectives:

At the end of the course students should be able to:
- Apply the tools to formulate and implement international strategy
- Possess an understanding of the problems facing managers working in MNE, or competing with them or working in collaboration with them (working in SMEs)
- Explore and develop alternative patterns of strategy and operations appropriate to an international context
